The SHSAT (Specialized High Schools Admissions Test) is the entrance exam for NYC’s specialized high schools. It tests students on ELA (reading and revising/editing) and math, and is the only factor used for admission.

The SHSAT is used for 8 NYC specialized high schools, including: Stuyvesant High School Bronx High School of Science Brooklyn Technical High School Brooklyn Latin School Staten Island Technical High School High School of American Studies High School for Math, Science and Engineering Queens High School for the Sciences These are among the most competitive public high schools in New York City.

The SHSAT is open to 8th-grade students (and some 9th graders) who are NYC residents and want to apply to specialized high schools.

Students can take the SHSAT: Once in 8th grade Once in 9th grade (optional retake) Most students have only two chances total, making early preparation critical.

8th Grade: More seats, higher acceptance chances 9th Grade: Fewer seats, more competition, harder math The 8th grade SHSAT is your best opportunity, while 9th grade is a backup option.

Students should start SHSAT prep in 6th or early 7th grade, especially in competitive areas like Brooklyn (Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Bath Beach, Gravesend) and Queens.

The SHSAT includes: ELA: reading comprehension + revising/editing Math: arithmetic, algebra, word problems, and logical reasoning

SHSAT cutoff scores vary each year depending on demand and student performance.
