Who Is Eligible to Apply to Hunter College High School?
For Fall 2027 admission, applicants must meet three primary eligibility requirements:
1. Current Grade Level
Students must currently be enrolled in sixth grade at a New York City or neighboring school, or be homeschooled and registered with the NYC Office of Homeschooling.
2. NYC Residency
As of September 1, 2026, applicants must reside full-time in one of New York City's five boroughs, with NYC serving as their primary residence.
3. Qualifying Fifth-Grade Test Scores
Students must meet Hunter's qualifying score requirements using the New York State Grade 5 ELA and Math exams or an approved alternative standardized test.
For the Fall 2027 admissions cycle, the minimum Spring 2026 New York State Grade 5 scores are:
ELA: 478
Mathematics: 497
Students who attended schools that administered approved alternative standardized tests may qualify through the approved testing pathway. Generally, qualifying students must have scored at or above the 90th national percentile in both Reading and Math.
Hunter also provides an Academic Insights Profile (AIP) pathway for certain students who narrowly miss the qualifying score requirements.
Parents should carefully review the official eligibility rules because qualifying requirements depend on the student's testing history.
Important: An invitation letter is not required if the student meets the eligibility criteria.

What Is on the Hunter College High School Entrance Exam?
The Hunter entrance exam evaluates students' reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, analytical thinking, and writing abilities.
For the 2027 admissions cycle, the exam consists of three sections:
1. Reading Comprehension
50 multiple-choice questions
Passages of varying lengths and writing styles
Questions that assess comprehension, interpretation, and textual analysis
Students must do more than simply understand what a passage says. They should be able to identify important details, interpret ideas, understand the author's purpose, and make logical inferences.
2. Writing Assignment
Students complete a writing assignment that may involve an essay or creative piece of up to two pages.
The writing section evaluates:
Originality and creativity
Organization and clarity
Supporting details and examples
Effective communication of ideas
Ability to respond thoughtfully to a prompt
Students should practice developing original ideas, organizing their thoughts, and expressing themselves clearly within a limited amount of time.
3. Mathematics
30 multiple-choice questions
Mathematical concepts and applications
Patterns, relationships, calculations, and problem-solving
Calculators are not permitted
The mathematics section emphasizes understanding and mathematical reasoning rather than relying only on memorized formulas.
Students have three hours to complete the entire examination and may complete the three sections in any order.
The multiple-choice sections are scored first. Students who meet the established threshold advance to the essay-reading stage. The writing assignments are evaluated by readers who do not know the students' identities.
Hunter does not provide individual section scores to families after the examination.

How Should Students Prepare for the Hunter Entrance Exam?
Preparing for Hunter requires more than completing practice questions. Students need to develop strong academic foundations, analytical abilities, and effective test-taking strategies.
Here are five important areas students should focus on:
1. Strengthen Reading Comprehension
Students should read a variety of literary and informational texts. Practice identifying the main idea, recognizing supporting details, making inferences, understanding vocabulary in context, and analyzing the author's purpose.
2. Develop Strong Writing Skills
Writing preparation should include timed essays, creative writing, descriptive writing, and organized responses to unfamiliar prompts. Students should practice brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising their work.
3. Improve Mathematical Reasoning
Students should review foundational mathematics while practicing challenging word problems, number patterns, logical reasoning, and multi-step problems. Understanding why a solution works is just as important as getting the correct answer.
4. Practice Time Management
With three sections to complete in three hours, students need to learn how to manage their time effectively. Taking timed practice tests can help students become familiar with the exam format and identify areas that require improvement.
5. Build Confidence Through Consistent Practice
Preparing over time allows students to identify weaknesses, strengthen academic foundations, and become more comfortable with challenging questions. Consistency is generally more productive than trying to learn everything at the last minute.
