Regents Eliminated! What Does Your Child Need to Prepare For?

New York State is making one of the biggest changes to its education system in decades. The New York State Board of Regents has approved a plan to phase out Regents exams as a graduation requirement and replace them with multiple pathways that allow students to demonstrate their learning through projects, portfolios, career-focused experiences, and other assessments.
Beginning with students entering 9th grade in the 2027-2028 school year, passing Regents exams will no longer be required to earn a New York State diploma. Current students will continue under existing graduation requirements during the transition period.
Why Is This Happening?
The state believes graduation requirements should reflect a broader range of student skills and achievements rather than relying primarily on standardized exams. The new system aims to provide students with multiple ways to demonstrate college, career, and civic readiness.
What Should Parents Know?
While Regents exams may no longer be required for graduation, the academic skills taught in Regents courses remain essential.
Subjects such as Algebra, Geometry, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies form the foundation for success on the SAT, AP exams, college entrance assessments, and college-level coursework. Colleges will continue to expect students to demonstrate strong academic preparation regardless of graduation requirements.
