SHSAT 2026: Important Dates NYC Students and Parents Must Know

Are you preparing for the 2026 Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT)? If your child is an eligible eighth grader or first-time ninth grader applying to a New York City specialized high school for Fall 2027, knowing the SHSAT registration deadline, test dates, and admissions timeline is essential.

The SHSAT registration deadline is October 30, 2026, and testing is scheduled for November 14, 15, 18, and 21, depending on the student's grade and school. NYC Public Schools has scheduled high school offer release for March 3, 2027, after 3 p.m. https://www.schools.nyc.gov/enrollment/enroll-grade-by-grade/specialized-high-schools

At Success Prep Education Center (SPEC), we help students prepare for the SHSAT through diagnostic assessments, structured instruction, and targeted practice. This guide explains the key SHSAT dates, what families need to do, and how to prepare for the digital adaptive exam.

Dates are based on the NYC Public Schools admissions calendar and may change. Students should confirm their assigned test date and location through official NYCPS instructions and their test ticket.

1. October 30, 2026: SHSAT Registration Deadline

The most urgent date for families is October 30, 2026, the scheduled deadline to register for the SHSAT.

Students must register through MySchools and indicate their preferences among the eight testing specialized high schools. Families should review the registration carefully and complete all required steps before the deadline.

Who can take the SHSAT?

Eligible applicants must be NYC residents who are current eighth graders or first-time ninth graders. Students from public, charter, private, parochial, and independent schools may qualify, as may eligible homeschooled students.

What should parents do before October 30?

  • Log in to the family's MySchools account.

  • Confirm the student's eligibility.

  • Review the eight testing specialized high schools.

  • Rank school preferences thoughtfully.

  • Submit the SHSAT registration and verify its completion.

Do not wait until the final day to resolve account or registration issues.

2. November 14–21, 2026: SHSAT Test Dates

The SHSAT is administered on designated school days and weekends. A student's test date depends on their grade and school type.

  • November 14 or 15: Registered eighth graders attending charter, private, parochial, independent, or K–12 schools, and eligible homeschooled students.

  • November 18: Registered eighth graders attending NYC public middle schools that end in eighth grade, testing at their current school.

  • November 21: Registered first-time ninth graders, testing at a central NYCPS location. An alternate date will be provided to students who cannot test on Saturday, according to NYCPS instructions.

Students should check their official test tickets for their assigned date and location rather than assuming every student tests on the same day.

What is different about the SHSAT in 2026?

Beginning in Fall 2026, the SHSAT uses a computer-adaptive format. The difficulty of questions adjusts based on a student's responses, while all students answer 50 ELA questions and 50 math questions during the standard 180-minute exam. https://www.schools.nyc.gov/learning/testing/specialized-high-school-admissions-test

Students should practice using digital materials, read each question carefully, and avoid rushing through questions simply to finish.

3. December 4, 2026: General High School Application Deadline

Taking the SHSAT does not replace the general NYC high school application.

Families interested in other NYC public high schools should submit the general high school application by December 4, 2026. Students applying to LaGuardia High School must also follow its separate application and audition process.

Applying to other schools provides additional options while families await specialized high school offers.

4. March 3, 2027: High School Offers Are Released

NYC Public Schools has scheduled high school offer release for March 3, 2027, after 3 p.m.

Families can check MySchools or contact their child's school for admissions information. Specialized high school offers are determined using SHSAT scores and the student's submitted school preferences, subject to available seats.

Not every student who takes the SHSAT will receive an offer. Families should review their results and follow the official instructions provided with any offer.

5. How Should Students Prepare for the SHSAT?

Although registration and testing dates are important, effective preparation should begin well before exam day.

A practical SHSAT preparation plan includes:

Build foundational skills. Review reading comprehension, revising and editing, algebra, geometry, ratios, statistics, and multi-step word problems.

Take a diagnostic assessment. Identify strengths and weaknesses in both ELA and mathematics to develop a targeted study plan.

Practice the digital format. Become familiar with the computer-based interface and adaptive testing experience using official practice resources.

Review mistakes consistently. Understand why an answer was incorrect rather than simply completing more practice questions.

Prepare for test day. Confirm the test ticket, follow official instructions, get adequate sleep, and arrive ready to concentrate.

Students preparing on a shorter timeline should prioritize their weakest areas and use their remaining study time strategically.
