Why SAT and Regents Preparation Matters More Than Ever

For the past several years, many colleges and universities have made standardized tests optional for students applying for admission. This change became especially common during the COVID-19 pandemic, when students faced limited access to testing centers.
But the college admissions landscape is changing again.
Some highly selective colleges are bringing back SAT and ACT requirements, and other schools are taking a closer look at the role standardized testing can play in admissions.
Dartmouth College, for example, recently reinstated its SAT/ACT requirement. According to Dartmouth, standardized test scores can provide valuable information about a student's academic preparation, particularly when considered alongside high school grades and coursework.
Dartmouth is not the only prestigious college to reconsider testing. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) reinstated its SAT/ACT requirement in 2022. MIT's admissions team found that test scores can help identify students who are academically prepared for the demands of college.
Interestingly, MIT also argued that standardized testing can help make admissions more equitable. While there has been criticism that standardized tests can favor students whose families can afford private tutoring and expensive test-preparation programs, MIT's admissions office pointed out that students from schools with fewer academic resources may have fewer opportunities to demonstrate their abilities in other ways.
A strong SAT score, therefore, can give students another opportunity to show what they know.
What Does This Mean for Students?
The return of standardized testing means that students and parents should not assume the SAT is no longer important.
College testing policies can change. A school that is test-optional today may change its requirements in the future. Even at schools that remain test-optional, submitting a strong score may give students another way to demonstrate their academic preparation, depending on the college's current policy.
The best approach is to be prepared.
Starting SAT preparation early gives students time to become comfortable with the test, understand the different types of questions, improve their skills and identify areas where they need additional practice.
It also gives students something extremely valuable: time.
